In the aftermath of the Super Bowl, all we seem to be hearing about is 50 Cent’s weight gain. I’ve seen all the memes circulating on social media and to be honest the difference between the images is about 20 years. I don’t know about you; but, 20 years has brought forth a lot of change in my own life physically and emotionally. As a 47-year-old man, I wanna give my man, 50 Cent, a shout out and say, “I feel you, Man. We’ve come a long way from where we started!” As I grow older, I have learned that it can be a struggle to keep the weight off and I am not as fit as I used to be. There are some lifestyle changes that can help battle the bulge and I’d like to share them with you.

As men age, their testosterone levels tend to drop from lifestyle factors such as poor diet, not enough sleep, carrying too high of a stress load, and too much alcohol or recreational drugs.

Poor diet can lead to a decrease in testosterone levels because it aids in weight gain. Excess body fat around the waist causes aromatase to convert testosterone to estrogen which leads to more weight gain. Keeping a healthy Body Mass Index is one way to protect yourself from low testosterone. You accomplish this through a healthy diet and exercise.

Poor sleep habits can cause testosterone levels to drop by as much as 15%, one study revealed. Most people need to strive for at least 7-9 hours of sleep. Any less than those hours can put your testosterone on a downhill spiral because testosterone is produced during the stages of deep sleep.

Stress causes an overproduction of the cortisol hormone which can reduce testosterone. Being a father, husband and business owner brings a high level of stress. I love hitting the weights and hiking to help deal with my stress. Physicians also recommend mindful meditation and yoga to help manage stress levels.

Alcohol can disrupt hormone receptors in the brain that control testosterone production. The same can be said for long term narcotic use. This is one reason that led me to stop drinking casually and save the drinks for special occasions.
